The Gallery - Education

Tara's theme for The Gallery this week is 'Education'...ooh a toughie!

Learning isn't my strong point.  I always did quite well at school but I hated exams.  Despite that I continued my learning even after getting a job at the tender age of 16.  I'm still to complete one exam for the Chartered Institute of Marketing to get my final qualification...maybe one day I'll get around to it. Who knows?

In the meantime I'm having fun learning about motherhood *cough*

When I first found out I was going to be mum back in July 2008, I rushed out to buy all these books.  I filled my head with the idea that everything I needed to know about pregnancy and motherhood I could glean from a book.

How wrong I was.

I don't think I've touched any of these books since having my daughter - apart from to get them out this week to photograph them.

For me, the best education in the ways of motherhood is learning on the job.

And what a wonderful job it is!

Now head over and view all the other Education entries this week...

Yup...and that's untouched too. I know you swear by Gina Ford but I just swear at her!

heehee, we were the same but for Tops I read them all nightly. Baby Boy has been shockingly neglected... lol

Haha, I did the exact same thing! On the job training is the only way to go however! x

Haha, I still hold true to the education of a different G Ford in my house

Each of my 4 pregnancies has been accompanied by books as I was so excited and wanted more more more info on how the baby was growing but I prefectly agree that you learn more form the baby than form any book and as for Gina, I was given her Twin book by a midwife and hated it. I couldn't disagree more with her

I have that pregnancy bible book the second one from the left! I was given it the first time round.
Learning on the job has proved to be a great learning curve indeed!

I had one Miriam Stoppard book when I was 18 and with child! Never, ever bought another one. I loathe the sanctimonious Ms Ford!

I certainly started with a great thirst for knowledge about what it meant to be a mum but what we haven't already learned from our parents, we learn from our kids x

I found my mothercare pregnancy & baby manual amongst my Mums things...was thrilled she had kept it all those years. I'd even written notes in it, lol...funny reading them from 22 yrs ago when I was a 19 yr old excited mum to be x

Brilliant take on the theme! Love it!
I only bought one book, read it and learnt nothing! Although that may be because I didn't read past the pregnancy pages...

I loved reading the pregnancy books, then as soon as she popped out realised that I didn't have any books to tell me what to do after, so figured we'd just wing it! Plus the idea of Gina Ford scares the pants off me! I agree, on the job is best x

I think I looked at the books before my son was born - spent ages comparing the bump sizes week by week. Once he came along they received a cursory glance now and again, mainly if I felt something wasn't quite right but, having a doctor in the house, I asked him!

Agreed! Hands on training is the best! Great take on education! :-)

I remember reading all the sections on wind, colic and crying in about four or five books - none of them told me where the off switch was ;-)

Penelope Leach was the rage in my day. And I will never forget my sister slating Dr Miriam Stoppard at a baby show only to find her stood behind her. Good take on the theme

Wow, this looks like half of my bookshelf :) I was a bit lax on the 'after' baby bit but absorbed everything pregnancy and birth! Oh wait, that explains the whole doula thing :D

I have a couple of those ones -- the one everyone seems to have in the States is the "What Not to Expect" series though -- it was my bible throughout those early years. Great take on the theme. =)

The spines don't look very broken. Very un-read books :-)
I agree, Aaron and me get along just fine muddling along.

Careful Inside the Wendy House. They started to criticise her on the radio the other day and then the presenter said "we better stop, she's known for being very litigious"....
