In February 2011 I decided to volunteer my Fridays to work in my local Save The Children shop.
I've always supported charity work and in particular, I give monthly to Cancer Research and MacMillan - it's only a small amount but I know it's being spent on a subject close to my heart.
With the arrival of Mini Cheddar in 2009, I gave up my job in marketing to pursue a 'career' as a stay at home mum. When Cancer Research rang me at the beginning of the year to increase my donation I had to decline due to my lack of wage. They understood but I still felt bad. It spurred me into looking into something I'd always been intrigued by - volunteering time for charity.
My parents were looking after my daughter every Friday and what would I do with that time? I'd do the housework or end up sat at the laptop blogging or reading blogs.
Save The Children work in more than 120 countries across the globe saving children's lives and fighting for their rights. It seemed a natural choice for me to dedicate a day of my week to this amazing charity and I'm so glad I did.
If you have even the smallest amount of time in your busy schedule to volunteer for charity work I would highly recommend it. The work that volunteers carry out is vital to the charity. Please consider the amount of time you spend in front of the computer or watching TV and if you can, channel that time to helping support charities. I was only supposed to volunteer my Friday mornings but I love it that much I'm there most of the day.
